The Position

The Laborer position supports the overall construction project and performs a variety of tasks geared toward maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient job site. Tasks involve physical labor at the construction site and in the shop. Duties may include repairing, operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and equipment, cleaning and preparing job sites and removing rubble and debris, erecting and taking down scaffolding and temporary structures, and removing waste materials. After introductory period, duties may include welding. Employer provides training and certification for welding compliance.

Essential Duties

Material Handling and Inventory 

  • Load and unload materials (steel, wood, etc.) using forklifts, hoists, or by hand 
  • Organize and store tools, equipment, and materials in designated areas 
  • Track inventory levels of consumables (nuts, bolts, paints) and notify supervisors for restocking 
  • Assist labor teams as needed 

Shop Labor and Equipment Maintenance 

  • Clean and maintain workshop area, ensuring it is safe and organized 
  • Perform basic maintenance on shop equipment, i.e. saws, drills, and welders 
  • Perform a variety of tasks involving manual labor in construction projects 
  • Clean and set up job sites for construction or fabrication tasks 
  • Perform light maintenance on equipment, i.e. oil and filter changes on light towers, skid steers, and generators, fueling equipment, etc. 

Welding and Fabrication Support

  • Support welders, machinists, and fabricators by holding materials, positioning parts, cleaning, grinding edges, cutting steel pieces, and prepping materials 
  • Measure and cut raw materials to specified lengths using hand tools or machinery 
  • Sand, clean, and prepare surfaces for welding and fabrication
  • Assemble prefabricated parts under supervision 

Welding Duties

  • Perform simple welding tasks (TIG or Stick) under the supervision of skilled welders 
  • Check welding equipment for functionality and make basic adjustments 
  • Inspect and clean welded joints for quality and precision 
  • Prep materials and surfaces before welding by grinding, cutting, or sanding 

Painting Duties

  • Clean, sand, and de-grease fabricated metal surfaces prior to painting 
  • Mask or cover areas that should not be painted 
  • Apply primers, paints, and finishes to fabricated metal parts using spray guns, brushes, or rollers 
  • Inspect finished surfaces for smoothness and uniformity, making touch-ups if necessary 
  • Maintain and clean painting equipment (spray guns and brushes) 
  • Safely store paints, solvents, and other hazardous materials following proper safety protocols 

Safety and Compliance

  • Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing tasks, including welding masks, gloves, and respirators 
  • Follow OSHA safety guidelines and company protocols to ensure a safe work environment 
  • Visibly support and uphold the company’s strong safety culture 
  • Handle hazardous materials, i.e. paints and welding gases according to safety procedures 
  • Remain current in all company required safety training and certifications 
  • Portray a positive attitude and demonstrate professional customer service skills 
  • Record work performed and materials used for project tracking and inventory 
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or material shortages to supervisors 

Position Details

  • Potential to travel up to 20% of the time, requiring overnight stays  
  • Keep an accurate log of all work performed 
  • Maintain and properly use company resources

Safety Requirements

  • Abide by and apply OSHA, AMSE, and ANSI safety and construction procedures, methods, and standards to every building, every day
  • Willingness to maintain and operate hand tools in a safe and proper manner
  • Able to work in a physically demanding environment and at various heights from ladders and aerial work platforms, primarily working outside

Position Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three years of experience in the commercial/industrial/agricultural construction industry preferred
  • Possess a valid driver’s license of proper class and necessary endorsements as required by law and legally able to drive vehicles/construction equipment
  • Travel Requirements - frequent travel (up to 50%) with occasional overnight stays required for this position
  • Skilled in using a variety of tools and equipment ranging from forklifts to backhoes and bulldozers
  • Physical strength and ability to do physical labor in all weather conditions
  • Strong mathematical skills preferred
  • OSHA Forklift Operator Certification preferred

 

Physical Demands/Working Environment

The physical demands described here are representative to be successful in this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to lift, bend, stretch,  stand, walk, sit, and carry up to 50 pounds, balance, stoop, kneel, climb stairs and ladders, push/pull, squat, crouch, and crawl. Employee must be able to enter the cab of a vehicle that is 3.5 feet (or more) off the ground; be able to sit in the operator’s seat of equipment and safely reach all pedals, switches, levers, buttons, etc. required to safely operate the equipment, and have an adequate field of vision of all instruments, gauges, warning lights, as well as an acceptable field of vision out of the windows and/or mirrors. There will be frequent exposure to moderate, and occasionally loud, noise levels. For safety reasons, the candidate must be able to communicate effectively in this moderate to loud environment.
